Where the Sky Falls

There are nights when the Northern Lights glow quietly along the horizon, and then there are nights when it feels as though the entire sky is coming down around you.

Where the Sky Falls was captured at Cox Lake along the South Dakota and Wyoming border on April 23, 2023, during an exceptionally powerful G4 Severe geomagnetic storm that reached a Kp index of 8+. It remains one of the strongest displays of the Northern Lights I have ever witnessed and photographed.

Towering curtains of turquoise, blue and green stretched from the horizon high into the night sky, with flashes of violet appearing between them. The aurora seemed to pour downward in enormous columns of light, dwarfing the silhouetted trees and landscape below. At times, there was hardly a direction I could look where something wasn't happening.

Cox Lake sits within an unusual landscape shaped by the complex groundwater systems of the northern Black Hills. But on this night, everything below seemed secondary. Standing beneath an aurora this immense gave the strange sensation that there was no longer much distance between the earth and the heavens, as if, for a moment, the sky itself was falling.
