Where Mountains End

There are places where the landscape feels enormous, until night falls and the sky reminds you just how small it really is.

On August 3, 2025, while camping outside of Crested Butte, Colorado, I stepped out beneath an exceptionally clear mountain sky. The rugged peaks and forests that had dominated the landscape during the day had become only a narrow horizon beneath an immense field of stars.

I intentionally gave the night sky most of the frame. Thousands of stars stretch overhead while the mountains sit quietly along the bottom, their ridge-lines still holding onto enough ambient light to reveal the layers, textures and forests of the Colorado landscape.

What struck me most that night wasn't a single astronomical event. It was simply the scale of everything above me. Away from the brighter lights of towns and cities, the number of stars visible to the naked eye can completely change your perception of the night. The longer I stood there, the less the mountains seemed to dominate the scene and the more they became the boundary between two completely different worlds.

That is what I wanted this photograph to feel like: the familiar landscape beneath something almost impossible to comprehend. Where Mountains End captures a quiet August night in Colorado; the place where the last ridge-line falls away and the universe seems to begin.
