Under the Falling Sky

Standing beneath the Northern Lights is one thing. Standing beneath them when they seem to stretch from the horizon to directly overhead is something entirely different.

Under the Falling Sky was captured at Cox Lake along the South Dakota–Wyoming border on April 23, 2023, during a powerful G4 Severe geomagnetic storm that reached a Kp index of 8+. It was one of the strongest aurora displays I had ever witnessed and photographed.

In this vertical composition, the immense scale of the storm becomes the focus. Curtains of green, turquoise and blue rise above the silhouetted landscape, with hints of violet appearing between the towering pillars. The vertical frame follows those columns of light upward, emphasizing just how far across the sky the aurora stretched.

There are photographs that capture what a place looked like, and others that come closer to capturing what it felt like to stand there. This was the latter, looking straight up beneath a sky alive with movement and color, feeling incredibly small underneath it all.
