Stars Falling Over Crested Butte

On August 3, 2025, while camping outside of Crested Butte, Colorado, I found myself beneath an incredibly clear mountain sky. Above the dark forests and rugged ridgelines, thousands of stars filled the frame, while several streaks of light appeared throughout the exposure.

The timing happened to fall during one of the more active stretches of the summer night sky. The Perseid meteor shower was already underway, building toward its mid-August peak as Earth traveled through debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. The Southern Delta Aquariids were active as well, having reached their peak only a few nights earlier.

Whether every streak captured here belonged to one of those showers can't be determined from the photograph alone, and that's part of what I love about nights like this. Meteors, satellites and other passing objects can cross a long exposure without warning, leaving behind small traces of everything that was moving through the sky while the shutter remained open.

Below it all, the mountains surrounding Crested Butte remained remarkably visible, giving the photograph that beautiful separation between the quiet Colorado landscape and the immense field of stars above it.
