Spearfish Canyon (Winter) — Exploration Print

This exploration print features Spearfish Canyon in the winter months and is part of the Road Map series—created to connect photography with the experience of place across changing seasons.

Captured during a time when the canyon quiets and the landscape becomes more introspective, this piece reflects the stillness and depth that winter brings to the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The photograph is overlaid with the primary roadway that winds through Spearfish Canyon, labeled by name and mapped directly across the image. The print also marks the general location where I was standing when capturing the photograph, anchoring the scene to a real moment along the canyon corridor. A compass at the bottom of the print indicates the direction I was facing, providing orientation within the landscape as it exists beyond the frame.

Designed as interactive artwork, this piece invites the viewer to trace the road, follow it through the canyon in real life, and experience the landscape beyond the photograph.
