Spearfish Canyon — Exploration Print

This exploration print features Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota and represents one of the earlier designs in the Road Map series. Known for its winding canyon road, rising limestone walls, and shifting light, Spearfish Canyon is experienced as much through movement as it is through view.

Overlayed onto the photograph is the primary roadway that travels through the canyon, mapped directly across the image to emphasize the route itself. The print identifies the general location where I was standing when capturing the photograph, grounding the image in a real moment along the drive. A compass at the bottom of the print indicates the direction I was facing, providing orientation and reinforcing the relationship between the road, the view, and the surrounding landscape.

Designed as interactive artwork, this piece invites the viewer to trace the road, follow it through the canyon, and revisit the experience of traveling through one of the Black Hills’ most iconic corridors. As a foundational piece within the collection, the Spearfish Canyon Exploration Print reflects the early vision of the series—centered on roads that shape how we move through and remember a place.
