Silhouettes of the Badlands

As the aurora shifted throughout the night, there were moments when the Badlands nearly disappeared into the darkness, leaving behind nothing but their unmistakable outline against the sky.

Captured during the G4 Severe geomagnetic storm of March 23, 2023, Silhouettes of the Badlands focuses on a quieter side of the display. Soft green auroral pillars dance just above the horizon while a deep, star-filled sky stretches overhead. Several streaks from meteors and other passing objects cut through the stars, adding another layer to an already active night sky.

Without daylight revealing every ridge and layer of the landscape, the formations become almost mysterious, reduced to their jagged peaks and recognizable shapes. The subtle glow of the aurora behind them was just enough to separate earth from sky, creating one of the quieter, moodier moments from an otherwise incredibly powerful night.
