Roughlock Fall

Captured in early October of 2018, this photograph preserves a beautiful chapter in the history of a landscape that has since changed dramatically.

At the height of autumn, the iconic Roughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon, cascaded through a lush, vibrant setting, surrounded by golden foliage and the untouched beauty of the season. Everything about this place felt harmonious, from the natural flow of the water to the surrounding trees that framed the falls so beautifully.

Since that October day, a powerful tornado has swept through the area, uprooting and toppling countless trees and forever altering the landscape. Along with many heavy snow falls and strong wind storms the waterfall's surroundings have become heavily overgrown, the course of the water has shifted, and much of the area remains in a period of extensive natural restoration. Although visitors can still make their way to the falls, the landscape no longer resembles the one I stood before in 2018.

That is what makes this photograph particularly meaningful to me.

As a limited-edition piece, it preserves a version of this landscape that no longer exists in quite the same way. It serves as a reminder of how profoundly nature can reshape itself, and how important it is to appreciate and protect the beautiful places we are fortunate enough to experience.

Photography has an extraordinary ability to hold onto moments in the natural world long after the landscape itself has changed. This image is a testament to that gift. A chance to revisit a place as it once was, in all its autumn glory.
