Rooted Beneath Giants

Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada | Autumn 2016

Deep within the Canadian Rockies, towering evergreens stand beneath an immense wall of ancient limestone, where the first snowfall of the season settles into the mountain's intricate folds and crevices.

Captured during my spontaneous road trip through Banff in the fall of 2016, this scene immediately drew my attention to the extraordinary contrast in scale. A dense forest of Rocky Mountain conifers, including species such as lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce, and subalpine fir, stretches toward the sky, yet appears almost miniature beneath the massive cliffs above.

These resilient forests are an essential part of the Canadian Rockies' subalpine ecosystem, enduring long winters and short growing seasons while providing shelter and habitat for mountain wildlife. Scattered hints of autumn gold add warmth to the landscape as winter begins to reclaim the higher elevations.

Rooted Beneath Giants is a reflection of strength, resilience, and the remarkable relationship between the living forest and the ancient mountains that rise above it. A reminder that even the tallest trees can appear small in the presence of nature's greatest wonders.
