Pronghorn Before the Fog
Custer State Park, Black Hills, South Dakota
On a fog-covered day along the Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park, a lone pronghorn stood quietly among the golden prairie grasses. Behind him, the silhouettes of bare trees gradually disappeared into the thick mist, transforming the normally expansive grasslands into a peaceful, almost dreamlike landscape.
Pronghorn are among North America's most remarkable native wildlife species. Often referred to as American antelope, these animals are actually members of their own unique family and are recognized as the fastest land mammals in North America, capable of reaching speeds approaching 60 miles per hour.
