North Until Gold

Sentinel Pass · Banff National Park, Alberta · 2016

In the fall of 2016, I spent three months living out of my Honda Element with no real destination in mind. I was simply traveling, following roads, landscapes, and curiosity wherever they led me. Eventually, I just kept going north, until I found myself in Banff National Park.

It happened to be one of the most spectacular times of year to arrive.

High above Moraine Lake, the trail toward Sentinel Pass climbs through Larch Valley, where alpine larches transform from green to brilliant gold for only a brief stretch each autumn. I had arrived at the height of their color, and the mountains had received their first dusting of snow the night before.

I remember hiking into the valley and seeing the larches glowing against the newly whitened peaks. They looked almost unreal; like tiny golden highlighters scattered across the base of an enormous wall of rock and snow. It remains one of the most incredible hikes I have ever experienced.

There was something especially fitting about discovering this place during a journey with no carefully planned destination. I hadn't traveled north specifically looking for Sentinel Pass. I had simply kept going, and somehow arrived during this fleeting intersection of autumn and winter.

Sometimes wandering puts you exactly where you're supposed to be.
