Iron Mountain Road — Exploration Print

This exploration print features Iron Mountain Road, also known as the Pigtail Highway, and represents one of the earliest designs in the Road Map series. Known for its split roadways, spiraling pigtail bridges, and tunnel-framed views, Iron Mountain Road offers a driving experience that reveals the Black Hills gradually, curve by curve.

Overlayed onto the photograph is the full path of Iron Mountain Road, mapped across the image to highlight the unique engineering and flow of the route. The print also identifies the general location where I was standing when capturing the photograph, grounding the image in a real moment along the drive while allowing the road itself to remain the focal point.

Designed as interactive artwork, this piece invites the viewer to trace the roadway, follow it through tunnels and turns, and experience the landscape as it was intended—slowly and intentionally. As a foundational piece within the collection, the Iron Mountain Road Exploration Print reflects the origins of the series and the enduring pull of roads that shape how we move through and remember a place.
