Green Lights

It was a night for sore eyes as the Northern Lights exploded across the sky over the Badlands of South Dakota.

On March 23, 2023, a close photographer friend and I headed east knowing there was potential for aurora activity. What unfolded became far more powerful than anticipated, eventually developing into a G4 Severe geomagnetic storm with a Kp index of 8.

Green Lights captures the storm in the midst of its activity, when a brilliant band of green aurora stretched across the horizon behind the rugged Badlands formations. Faint pillars of light reached higher into the atmosphere, while thousands of stars remained visible overhead.

Throughout the night, the aurora seemed to constantly shift in color, intensity and shape. In this moment, green took over the horizon, creating an almost otherworldly contrast against the dark, jagged landscape below.
