Forged in Iron
High above the Million Dollar Highway, the iron-rich slopes of Red Mountain No. 2 rise above the historic Yankee Girl Mine, their brilliant crimson color the result of millions of years of geological transformation. Long before prospectors arrived in search of silver, hot mineral-rich waters flowed through these volcanic peaks, depositing vast networks of metals deep within the mountain. As time exposed those minerals to the elements, the iron slowly oxidized, staining the mountainside in the fiery reds and oranges that have become one of Colorado's most recognizable landscapes.
On this autumn morning, low clouds drifted silently through the San Juan forest, briefly unveiling the weathered remains of the Yankee Girl Mine below. Once one of Colorado's richest silver producers, the mine now stands as a quiet reminder of the people who carved a livelihood from these rugged mountains and the remarkable geology that made it possible.
