Cement Ridge Autumn Fog was captured on the first weekend of October from the summit of Cement Ridge, an old fire lookout tower site on the South Dakota–Wyoming border in the Northern Hills. In 2018, the fall colors were at their peak and a thick fog swirled through the rolling hills and trees as the sun approached the horizon. Arriving at sunset, I witnessed one of the most beautiful light transitions I’d ever seen in the Hills: warm rays beginning to break through low clouds, creating drama and depth across the landscape while an atmospheric inversion settled into the valleys below.
From this elevated vantage, the terrain itself appeared to take on a deeply evocative shape—like a resting figure lying in quiet repose, reminiscent of the Native ancestors whose presence and history are woven throughout this region. For many Indigenous cultures of the Northern Plains, the land is not simply a backdrop but a living story; its forms and features carry meaning tied to origin, memory, and belonging. In this view, the hills’ gentle rise and fall can be read as a great body at rest, inviting reflection on the deep time of place and the layered histories of this land.
The fog, autumn hues, and shifting light together create a moment that feels both ephemeral and enduring.
