Between Earth and Venus

At first glance, the Moon in this photograph almost appears to be caught in an eclipse, but what you're actually seeing is Earthshine, also known as the Da Vinci Glow.

Captured over the Badlands on March 23, 2023, the Moon was just a few days past its new phase, leaving only a thin crescent directly illuminated by the Sun. The faint glow revealing the rest of the lunar disk comes from sunlight reflecting off Earth, illuminating the Moon's dark side, and traveling back to us. A beautiful exchange of light across hundreds of thousands of miles.

Just above the Moon shines Venus, while the growing geomagnetic storm paints the surrounding sky in shades of violet, pink and green. Later that night, the storm would intensify to G4 Severe conditions, creating an extraordinary display of Northern Lights across South Dakota and far beyond.
