Captured on a quiet May morning, this image of Bear Butte came to life through a mix of instinct, timing, and pure luck. I was driving back to Spearfish at sunrise when the light over Sturgis began to glow in those unmistakable deep blues and fresh spring greens. I knew Bear Butte was moments away from being drenched in that same magic.
Trusting my sense of direction, I took exit 30 and followed a narrow dirt road over a hillside hoping it might reveal something special. As I crested the top, the land opened up to a completely new perspective of Bear Butte, one I’d never seen photographed quite like this.
That spontaneous detour led me to one of my all-time favorite views…and what has since become one of my best-selling images. A reminder that sometimes the best moments come from simply following the light.
