Autumn Under Orion

On October 20, 2023, beneath a remarkably dark autumn sky, my husband and I set out to photograph the annual Orionid meteor shower as it approached its peak.

Each fall, Earth passes through a trail of dust and debris left behind by Halley’s Comet. When those tiny fragments enter our atmosphere at tremendous speeds, they burn brightly across the night sky as Orionid meteors. The shower takes its name from the constellation Orion, the point in the sky from which its meteors appear to radiate.

But what caught my attention that night wasn't only what was happening overhead.

Against a sky overflowing with stars, this lone tree was still holding onto the warm golds and yellows of autumn. Above it, the Milky Way stretched through the darkness as we waited for streaks of light to appear overhead.

To bring the tree out of the darkness, my husband and I used our flashlights to gently paint it with light during the long exposure, giving the autumn leaves separation from the night sky. Everything you see was captured in a single exposure. This is not a composite image. It was one carefully timed moment, bringing the landscape and night sky together in-camera.
