After Dark is a collection created during the hours when most people have already gone home.
Northern lights moving across the Black Hills, the milky way rising over familiar landmark, meteor showers, lightning, and those rare nights when the sky became something I couldn't have planned.
Some of these moments required strategic planning. Others required me to simply grab my camera and head into the darkness to see what was happening.
This collection brings those nights together for the first time.

Unlike my permanent collections, After Dark opens during a limited number of ordering windows throughout the year. The first release is available September 24 through October 4.

Prelude to Midnight
Devils Tower • May 10, 2024
On May 10, 2024, I made my way to Devils Tower as one of the most powerful geomagnetic storms in decades reached Earth. Multiple coronal mass ejections had erupted from the sun in the days prior, eventually producing a G5 Extreme geomagnetic storm with a Kp index reaching 9.
This photograph was captured roughly an hour after sunset, when darkness was finally beginning to reveal what was happening overhead. Soft greens and blues stretched across one side of the sky while violet and magenta began appearing around Devils Tower. Stars remained visible through the color, with several streaks cutting across the exposure as the first part of an extraordinary night unfolded.
At this point, the sky was beautiful, but it hadn't shown us what it was truly capable of yet.
Over the next several hours, the aurora continued to strengthen until around midnight, when the display I witnessed became almost unbelievable. What began as subtle bands of color surrounding Devils Tower would eventually erupt into one of the most intense Northern Lights displays I have ever stood beneath.
This photograph captures that anticipation before the crescendo. The moment the night began revealing just how extraordinary it was going to become.
