Karate Do Shito Ryu Katas: A Guide for Beginners and Advanced Practitioners
Karate Do is a martial art that originated in Okinawa, Japan. It is characterized by the use of punches, kicks, blocks, strikes, and kata. Kata are pre-arranged forms that simulate combat scenarios and teach the principles of Karate Do. There are many styles of Karate Do, and one of them is Shito Ryu.

Shito Ryu is a style of Karate Do that was founded by Kenwa Mabuni in 1934. It is named after the two main influences of Mabuni: Itosu Anko and Higaonna Kanryo. Shito Ryu is famous for having the most katas of the major styles of Karate Do. After the death of Mabuni in 1958, Shito Ryu fragmented into different associations and school systems. This has led to different organizations using different katas and having the kata in different orders.
This article will provide an overview of some of the katas used in Shito Ryu Karate Do, from beginner to advanced level. It will also provide links to videos and/or written instructions for each kata. However, if you have any questions about a particular Shito Ryu kata movement, please check with your instructor.
Kihon Kata
Kihon Kata are introductory kata used to train beginners before they start on the more formal katas such as the Pinan series. They are also known as Taikyoku Kata or Heian Kata in other styles of Karate Do. There are five Kihon Kata in Shito Ryu:
Kihon Kata Ichi
Kihon Kata Ni
Kihon Kata San
Kihon Kata Yon
Kihon Kata Go
Pinan Kata
Pinan Kata are the basic katas of Shito Ryu Karate Do. They are also known as Heian Kata or Pyong-An Kata in other styles of Karate Do. They were created by Itosu Anko, one of the main teachers of Mabuni. There are five Pinan Kata in Shito Ryu:
Pinan Shodan
Pinan Nidan
Pinan Sandan
Pinan Yondan
Pinan Godan
Naifanchin Kata or Naihanchi Kata
Naifanchin Kata or Naihanchi Kata are intermediate katas of Shito Ryu Karate Do. They are also known as Tekki Kata in other styles of Karate Do. They were taught by both Itosu Anko and Higaonna Kanryo, the two main teachers of Mabuni. There are three Naifanchin Kata or Naihanchi Kata in Shito Ryu:
